Faculty Member, School of English, Sociology, Politics and Contemporary History
Lecturer in Politics and Media
About
I hold a BA (hons) in Politics from Kingston University (UK). Through my MA and PhD, both received at Leeds University (UK), I have specialized in International Communications, i.e. the study of the impact of communication technologies on international politics and society.
I joined Politics and Contemporary History at Salford University (UK) in September 2008. I was previously a Lecturer in International Communications at the Institute of Communications Studies (ICS), Leeds University and spent one semester as visiting Lecturer at the School of Media and Public Affairs (SMPA), George Washington University (Washington DC).
I am currently developing two research projects. The first is about the role of foreign correspondents in 21st century public diplomacy. The second is about the role of communications and the media in the radicalization processes leading to terrorism. I have also written a book: Explaining News: National Politics and Journalistic Cultures in Global Context (forthcoming, July 2010).
I have recently won the 2008 Denis McQuail Best Article of the Year for Advancing Communication Theory Award. I am the ASCoR (Amsterdam School of Communication Research) McQuail Honorary Fellow of 2009-10.
My research interests are multidisciplinary and cover:
•International news and comparative journalism
•Political communications, particularly the relationship between political actors and the media within and across state borders
•The role of the media in conflict, particularly in the fight against terrorism
•The impact of new communication technologies on political and social processes
