About
Carolyn Downs is currently project director of the ELIE project. ELIE stands for Employability: learning through international entrepreneurship. This is an EU Erasmus-funded project. We have worked with 200 immigrant entrepreneurs across the EU and are developing learning materials for students and SMEs based upon their lived experience.
Carolyn has pioneered research into content generated risks to young people from online social networking and led a significant study into the role of alcohol in youth leisure. She also chairs the International Leisure, Recreation and Heritage Research Group. This group started in September 2011 and now has more than 60 members across the world.
Her PhD was a ‘Social, Economic and Cultural History of Bingo 1906-2005’ and this acted as a springboard for her current research into various social aspects of gambling.
Carolyn was the PI on the first UK study of the relationship between Gambling and Debt (funded by Gamcare and the Money Advice Trust) and completed in June 2009.
Carolyn also maintains an active interest in history, publishing regularly on 18th century trade and radicalism and the history of gambling.
